Banking Vietnam 2009 opens in Hanoi

The Banking Information Technology Department of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) in coordination with the International Data Group (IDG) organized “Banking Vietnam 2009 Hanoi Conference and Expo” in Hanoi on May 27-29. The Expo featured the theme of “Modern banking technology with Vietnam’s economic development in the context the Global Economic Crisis”.

The conference and Expo was attended by SBV Governor Nguyen Van Giau, Mr. Hoang Van Phong, Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Do Trung Ta, Prime Minister’s Envoy on ICT and Chairman of the National Council for Science and Technology Policy, Ms. Tal Nay Im, assisstant of the Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, Ms. Victorya Kwakwa, Counntry Director of the World Bank in Vietnam, and representatives of the relevant ministries, committees of the National Assembly, the Hanoi People’s Committee, SBV departments, the Vietnam Banks Association, commercial banks, international financial institutions, IT firms, the sponsors and mass media.

Opening the Expo, SBV Governor Nguyen Van Giau stressed that over the past years, Banking Vietnam has become an annual of practical significance for banking modernization and renovation. In the context of the global economic crisis, it is of paramount importance with the aim of providing and exchanging experience, development solutions, technological application to maintain, renovate and develop banking operations. The SBV governor stated that the application of IT is not only the important basis for banking renovation and modernization, but also provides effective support for governance, risk management, hence contributing to enhancing the quality of services, the level of safety and security of banking operations. The Governor called upon the banking sector to accelerate investment in new and modern technology research and application in order to sustain its development with new, creative and effective technology solutions while promoting non-cash payment and modern electronic banking services.

Under the theme of “Modern Banking Technology with Vietnam’s Economic Development in the context of the Global Economic Crisis”, Banking Vietnam 2009 Hanoi focuses on three hottest issues, namely improving and renovating banking technology; safety and security for the technological system; modernizing payment technology and developing banking services. These issues are a major interest of entire Vietnamese banking sector to enhance its systemic connectivity, modernize services, and improve its compatitiveness and position.

Banking Vietnam 2009 Hanoi is a special occasion to celebrate its 10th anniversary. This is an important milestone for Banking Vietnam to go beyond an ordinary significance of an annual international forum of banking technology and services. This is also an opportunity to chart out the objectives and orientation for the next Banking Vietnam to become more professional and more practical.
