Australia to help implement FTA

Australia applauded Viet Nam’s commitment to an open market and promised to help the country implement the Asian-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA), said Australia’s first ambassador to ASEAN and Deputy Secretary of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Gillian Bird.

In an interview with Vietnam News Agency yesterday, Bird said that Australia would supply Viet Nam with technical support and further co-operate with the country in fields such as infrastructure development, education, transportation, and by providing scholarships for human resources training.

Implementation of AANZFTA included abolishment and reduction of some taxes imposed on goods, simplification of import-export administrative procedures, and provision of updated trade and goods information to importers and exporters, she said.

The establishment of AANZFTA aimed at building a 600-million people strong consumer market with a combined GDP of US$2.5 trillion, she added.

Plans call for ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand to abolish 90 per cent of various taxes and open services and investment markets so that skilled labourers and investors would have opportunities to work throughout the region.

Bird was also welcomed yesterday by permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Doan Xuan Hung.

The two sides agreed that the Viet Nam-Australia relationship has developed widely and deeply in many fields such as politics, economics, and tourism.

They also believe the two countries would continue to foster ties for the interest of people in both nations, contributing to peace, stability, co-operation and development of the region and the world.
