Vietnam disburses 67.4bl JPY in ODA in 2008
By March 31, the last day of the 2008 fiscal year, Vietnam has disbursed 67.4 billion JPY in ODA funding from Japan, said the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The figure almost reaches the goal set for the 2008 fiscal year, JICA Country Representative Tsuno Motonori said at a press briefing on March 31, where he also introduced the Japanese Government’s provision of 83.2 billion JPY (900 million USD) in ODA loans for Vietnam.
The JICA official commented that Vietnam was able to disburse ODA faster thanks to experiences it gained from the implementation of ODA projects over the last 15 years.
However, the representative pointed out the fact that loans toward major projects in key cities such as Hanoi and HCM City have seen slower disbursement rates, and suggested that ministries join hands to hasten the process.
He added that he expects once ODA projects speed up, more new jobs will be created and the two countries will be able to reach agreements on new ODA projects, on top of existing ones.
According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Japan has been Vietnam’s largest ODA donor since it resumed funding for Vietnam in 1992.
The new sum of 83.2 billion JPY will bring total Japanese committed ODA to Vietnam (including non-refundable aid and preferential credits) to 1.47 trillion JPY./.
