Stabilising market helps Vietnam’s CPI lift 0.35%

Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) on April rose 9.23 percent year on year and a 0.35 percent compared to previous month, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The figure shows the gradual stabilisation of Vietnam’s CPI compared to last year’s figures.

In April 2008, the CPI saw an increase of 2.2 percent from March 2008 and 21.42 percent from the previous year. Foods and restaurant, which usually accounts for 40 percent of CPI, increased slightly by 0.4 percent year on year thanks to the rebalancing of supply and demand in the local market.

While grain prices saw a slight increase at 0.03 percent in April, the price of foods and foodstuff saw a strong fluctuation of 0.46 percent due to the soaring price of meat products resulting from the hike in animal feed prices.

Price tags on restaurant menus also increased by 0.83 percent year on year in April, the GSO said.

The price of transportation services increased by 0.48 percent in April, due to fluctuations in petrol prices, and the price of beverages-cigarette and construction materials saw a similar hike at 0.45 percent.

Garment-footwear, household appliances and medicine-healthcare services saw an increase of 0.2 percent, 0.28 percent and 0.24 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, the entertainment sector, which includes tourism, showbiz and sport, saw a decrease of 0.64 percent thanks to mass discounts by tour operators.

The US dollar registered an increase of 1.25 percent compared to the previous month and 11.21 percent over the corresponding period last year. Gold prices saw a corresponding increase of 1.4 percent and 8 percent.

While CPI in the capital city of Hanoi saw an increase of 0.13 percent over the last month, CPI in the southern economic hub of HCM City rose by 0.49 percent.
