Electricity market needs to be highly competitive
The Vietnam Energy Association held a seminar in Hanoi on April 9 on the building of a competitive electricity market.
The seminar aims to collect the opinions of scientists, managers, economic groups and businesses, with a focus on measures to restructure the electricity sector to be submitted to the Government for consideration in the near future.
Tran Viet Ngai, head of the Vietnam Energy Association, said that the electricity sector is expected to have a capacity of 19,200MW in 2010 with an electricity output of 112 billion Kwh, equivalent to an average amount of 1,200 Kwh/per capita/year. In 2025, the sector’s capacity will rise to 69,000MW with an electricity output of 431 billion Kwh, equivalent to an average amount of 3,700 Kwh/per capita/year, or four times higher than the current figure. Therefore, he said, the electricity sector needs huge resources, and it is essential to have a strongly competitive electricity market in order to attract more domestic and foreign investors to the sector.
According to Vo Quang Nam, deputy general director of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, in recent years, his group has achieved rapid development in electrical energy, thus contributing to national economic development, ensuring a stable supply of electricity has become an urgent need, he said.
Other participants agreed that it is necessary to build a competitive electricity market. Apart from the Vietnam Electricity Group, there should be other electricity corporations involved to sharpen their competitive edge to attract investors.
