Duty-free regulations undergo overhaul
Duty-free goods can now be stored at duty-free shops in Viet Nam for up to a year, following a decision by the Prime Minister to regulate trade in duty-free items.
Under the decision, imported goods at duty-free shops with unpaid duty will be treated as temporarily imported goods whilst imported duty-paid goods and goods made in Viet Nam on sale at duty-free shops will be treated in accordance with the regulations governing temporarily exported items.
The period of storage may be extended by up to 180 days.
The new regulations stipulate that cigarettes, beer, liquor and electric products on sale at duty-free shops must be identified with a label issued by the Ministry of Finance stating "Viet Nam duty not paid".
The regulations also identify those who can purchase goods at duty-free shops and provides conditions for such purchases.
As a result of the decision, payment at duty-free shops now can be made in Vietnamese dong, US dollar or Euro.
