Power plant project signs on consultant
Vietnam’s Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Co (PECC2) signed a contract worth US$1.8 million in Hanoi on January 7 with Malaysia’s Janakuasa Sdn Bhd to provide consultancy services to the Duyen Hai 2 coal-fired power plant project in the southern province of Tra Vinh.
Duyen Hai 2 is a second-phase project of the Duyen Hai Power Generation Complex, located in Duyen Hai District. Janakuasa will develop two 600MW units to come on line in 2014-15.
Construction of the first 600MW power plant will begin in 2011, with Janakuasa investing about US$1.5 billion and taking 100-percent ownership and operating responsibility for the plant. Upon completion, Duyen Hai 2 would become one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the country, supplying 7,200-7,800GWh annually to the national power grid.
Phase one covered the Duyen Hai 1 2x500MW thermal power plant project and infrastructure for the Duyen Hai Power Generation Complex, including a coal jetty.
The Duyen Hai 2 plant is expected to consume about 3.5 million tonnes of coal per year.
The project is part of the Vietnamese Government’s power development master plan, he added. Demand for electricity in Vietnam is expected to grow at a brisk pace of about 17-22 percent annually during 2006-15.
