Cooking gas prices go up for Tet

The retail price of cooking gas on the domestic market has increased due to the world gas price hike and high demand locally with Tet rapidly approaching.

The country's gas firms such as Petrolimex, Sai Gon Petro, Gia Dinh Gas and Shell Gas started to apply new price from January 1, 2009.

In shops nationwide, prices for a 12 kilo gas canister have been raised by about VND10,000-15,000.

"Our shop applied the new price level of VND200,000 per 12 kilo canister (US$12) at the beginning of 2009, up VND15,000 compared with the price last week. However, consumption is still high," said Nguyen Thanh Huong, owner of Magic Flame Gas Shop.

Thanh Tai Gas Co has surged their price by VND10,000 to VND185,000 ($11) per 12 kilo canister and VND195,000 ($11.7) per 13 kilo canister, according to Nguyen Thi Phuong, the company's deputy general director.

Domestic gas firms made plans in late December to raise gas prices up VND4,000 - 6,000 per 12 kilo canister because the world gas price was forecast to increase by 3 per cent early in the new year. However, the world price has increased by an unexpected 10 per cent to $380 per tonne, resulting in the higher than planned VND10,000-15,000.

According to Tran Minh Loan, general director of An Pha SG Oil and Gas Joint Stock Co, the world gas price hike is caused by conflicts in the Middle East and the world's strong gas consumption demand in winter.

The domestic gas price fluctuates greatly according to changes in world oil and gas prices and transport fees because almost all gas for the domestic market has been imported, according to Petrolimex.

Tran Tien Anh, a client of the Magic Flame Gas shop, said. "The increase has not affected my family much, because it's the yearly rule that the price increases with Tet approaching."
