Russian importers eye Vietnamese wood products
Sixteen Russian importers spent a week touring southern Vietnam factories to study local woodwork products suitable for the Russian market, the local wood industry association said.
The trip, which began on December 1, is being hosted by the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
An official from the Ho Chi Minh City Handicraft and Wood Industry Association said Russia was a promising market for Vietnamese wood products.
However, Vietnam’s export to Russia were still modest, partly due to high import tariffs, he said. Sales of wood products to Russia in the first seven months of this year were worth just US$2 million, out of the total of about $1.6 billion worth of goods exported to the country.
Plyshevskiy Michail, chairman of Sverlopsk Wood Association, said Vietnamese wood exporters would be able to avoid Russia’s high import tax if they produced and processed parts in Vietnam for assembly in Russia.
