Retail market: small shops compete with supermarts

Home appliance centers have been bustling full of buyers. Meanwhile, small shops remain quiet despite the year-end high-sale season.

The home appliance shops on Hoang Van Thu, Hung Vuong and Quang Trung streets have only been receiving several clients a day as of late.

The owner of Duc Cuong home appliance shop, on Hoang Van Thu street in Tan Binh district, complained that sales have been going very slowly.

Other shops also said that they can only sell a few products to loyal clients. The owner of Hoang Minh shop, on Truong Chinh street in Tan Binh district, said that slow sales are the common problem of small shops, adding that consumers now tend to go to big centers and supermarts to buy products instead of small shops.

Some shop owners said that they are inferior to supermarts because they do not have big capital and advantages in business premises. Moreover, small shops cannot receive support from electronics companies in terms of price, promotion campaigns and advertisement expenses.

They said that as small shops only purchase products in small quantities, they cannot receive big discounts from the producers. The owner of Trung Hien shop, on Hoang Van Thu street in Tan Binh district, said that though small shops have the advantage of a smaller and lower-cost staff, as well as less expenses on business premises, they cannot lure customers.

He said that customers now like going to big centers, where there are many choices for them and the advertisements prove to be very attractive. The customers do not understand that they will get the same policies on warranty and maintenance for the products they purchase from the producers, not matter whether they purchase from supermarts or smaller shops.

Nevertheless, small shops have decided not to give up in the struggle with supermarts. The small shops have been trying to attract clients with promotion campaigns, discount programs and good post-sale services.

Hoang Dinh Shop, on Hoang Van Thu street in Tan Binh district, has hung up a banderole that states its commitment to selling products at prices that are more competitive than big supermarts.

The advertisement piece has helped a lot. Huynh Thanh Hai, manager of the shop, said that in past days, there were only three clients per day on average, but the number has risen to six after the banderole was hung. Hai affirmed that the price of the products sold by the shop is at least VND 100,000 lower than that applied by supermarts.

Tien Dung shop, on Quang Trung street in Go Vap district, has announced it would give presents, hair-dryers, non-stick pans and irons, to buyers at the shop. Besides, shops have committed to provide good post-sale services.

Hoang Minh shop has advertised that it is selling 21 inch TVs, brand-new, at only VND 1.4 million. The shop owner said that he has accepted lower profit in order to lure more customers.

However, the efficiency of the advertisement campaigns remains unclear, as more and more customers tend to go to big centers and supermarts, while turning their backs to small shops. Ngan, who lives in district 11, HCM City, said that when she needs to buy something, she will go to the supermart.

Ngan said that she knows that the price at supermarts is always higher than that at small shops, but she does not have concerns about the quality of products when purchasing goods at supermarts. Meanwhile, Trung from Tan Phu district also said that he prefers supermarts where there are more products for him to choose.
