Vietnam to chair IMF/WB 2009 Annual and Spring Meetings

All member states of the IMF/WB 2008 Annual Meetings have unanimously selected the Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam, Nguyen Van Giau, to chair the Annual and Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WB) next year in Istanbul, Turkey for the first time.

Mr. Giau gave a speech when taking office as chairman of IMF/WB 2009 Annual and Spring Meetings at the closing ceremony of the IMF/WB 2008 Annual Meetings held in Washington. DC, USA on October 13.

Under the framework of the IMF/WB meetings this year, Mr. Giau met with the President of the World Bank, Robert Zollick, and US Treasury Department Assistant Secretary, Neal Kashkari, who directly took part in the design of a US$700 billion financial rescue plan.

They discussed issues related to stabilisation of the world market, the global finance crisis and its effect on Vietnam's economy.
