Polluting South Korean factory halted
A monosodium glutamate (MSG) maker in northern Phu Tho Province on Wednesday has been ordered to suspend parts of its operations which cause environmental pollution, a provincial official said Thursday.
Vice Chairman of Phu Tho People’s Committee Dang Dinh Vuong said South Korean MSG-maker Miwon Vietnam is required to have a wastewater treatment plant before resuming certain production activities.
Vuong said the decision would suspend the company’s activities in departments that produce industrial waste, including those that manufacture glutamic acid from cassava starch and molasses.
Earlier, Phu Tho Province’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment had fined the company VND32 million (US$1,930) for environmental violations.
In early October, Miwon Vietnam was caught discharging wastewater via a substandard treatment system.
Head of the provincial Environmental Police Bureau, Ngo Quang Thieu, said the company has confessed to “releasing some 150 cubic meters of wastewater into the river daily since late last year.”
Miwon Vietnam makes about 30,000 tons of MSG a year.
