2007 stock millionaire: I keep working
Chairman of the Management Board of the Saigon Investment Group Dang Thanh Tam, who topped the 2007 list of 100 stock market millionaires, said that he does not care about the stock price falls. He said that with the volume of shares he his holding, he is still a millionaire on the stock market.
Tan Tao and Kinh Bac, two subsidiaries belonging to the Saigon Investment Group, are listing shares on HCM City and Hanoi bourses. In 2007, with 30mil Kinh Bac shares (KBC), and 4.2mil Tan Tao shares (ITA) worth VND6,300bil, Dang Thanh Tam was listed as the richest stock market millionaire in accordance with a report by local newspaper VN Express.
With the storm on the stock market, the prices of shares of Mr Tam and the millionaires in the top 100 millionaires have been decreasing. The values of the shares Tam was holding had decreased by VND700bil over the first five months of the year to VND5,600bil. The value had reduced by half again as much more by early October.
One year after becoming the richest stock person in Vietnam, Tam has not made many big changes. He had a calm look when he appeared at the Conference of Outstanding Entrepreneurs on October 11, held on the occasion of Vietnamese Entrepreneurs’ Day (October 13), with no assistant.
Those who don’t know him would not imagine that he is the owner of a series of the biggest industrial zones in Vietnam.
When the reporter mentioned the title ‘the richest person on the stock market’, Tam smiled and said: “I’m still the richest person on the stock market because the volume of shares I’m holding has not changed in the past year.”
Tam said that stock price falls are a common problem of the stock market; therefore, the falls have also been affecting US billionaire Warren Buffett. However, Tam believes that the government’s efforts and efforts by enterprises will help the stock market recover.
Tam said that ups and downs are very normal things in business. The most important thing is to be able to turn difficulties into opportunities.
He related that several years ago, when business prospered, he was so busy that he almost had no time to eat at home. Meanwhile, the difficulties of the national economy in the first months of the year allowed him to take care of himself.
He has more time to follow training courses to get more knowledge, and he has more time to read books about billionaires.
“When business goes smoothly, I try to earn money. When business goes slowly, I try to learn to get more knowledge. In fact, I don’t care about if I’m rich or not, the thing I am interested in is that I can work well,” Tam said. Tam is known as a typical example of ‘leaning and learning more’ in the business circle.
One of the biggest capabilities of Tam is drawing up projects. Several-thousand-page projects have been catching his attention since he wrote the first pages for the establishment of Tan Tao industrial zone.
Tam can speak English fluently, which allows him to discuss things with foreign partners freely without interpreters. As a lawyer, he knows well about Vietnamese and international laws. On working trips abroad, he can work as a CEO, an interpreter and lawyer at the same time, which allows him to make decisions quickly.
Tam said that success does not come easily, and that businessmen need to accept working hard before they can become successful.
