Vietnamese shoes secure firm foothold in Mexico

The volume of Vietnamese shoes exported to Mexico has increased sharply in recent year, said Jose Antonio Abugaber, Chairman of the Guanajuato State Footwear Industry Chamber (CICEG).

Mr Abugaber attributed this to a decrease in the competitiveness of a number of other footwear exporters on the market.

Last year, Vietnam exported nearly 20 million pairs of shoes to Mexico, accounting for 30 percent of the Central American country’s total imported shoes, while products of the same type from China – which used to be the largest shoes exporter to Mexico –made up only 7 percent.

According to the CICEG Chairman, Vietnamese shoes have dominated the Mexican market thanks to their cheap price, now costing only US$8/pair compared to US$22/pair produced by Mexican businesses.
