Power shortage very likely next year

Partial power shortage of total 200 million kWh is very likely in northern region in the dry season, according to Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang.

The ministry had a working session with Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) on the implementation of the 2008 plan and building plan for 2009.

Minister Hoang asked that EVN speed up construction of power plants to add another 3,000 MW to the national grid so that the country's total electricity generation capacity in 2009 will be increased to 18,000 MW.

The sector is requested to meet essential demands in power for production and living, as well as ensure electricity quality and safety, Mr Hoang said, adding that that the EVN should not carry out mainternance work for power plants at the same time to limit power shortage.
