Personal computer market bullish in second half, IDC tips

The personal computer (PC) market in Vietnam is expected to post strong growth in the second half of this year, especially in the notebook segment, despite the country’s economic woes, according to an industry report.

Sales increased five percent year-on-year to 337,000 units in the second quarter of this year, according to a report released Tuesday by IDC, a subsidiary of market research firm International Data Group.

“The PC market will become more exciting and attractive in the second half of 2008 as more new products with diversified designs and attractive prices are being introduced, as well as attractive financing programs for PC purchasers,” Nguyen My Phuong, market research analyst of IDC, said.

Total shipments fell 5.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter due to the sluggish economy, the unstable exchange rate and decisions by government and enterprises to cut back on investments in IT products, IDC said.

However, consumers are still keen on purchasing notebooks due to the variety of models and flexible pricing. Notebook unit sales grew by 116 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, IDC said.

The U.S.-based Hewlett Packard led the PC market with a 71 percent increase in unit sales, followed by

China’s Lenovo, which posted a 15 percent increase in sales. Acer was the third best seller despite a 53 percent decrease in sales in the quarter.

IDC said it expected to see growth in the Vietnam PC market in the first half of 2009 as the economy recovered and demand for PCs increased from the business and education sectors.
