VN, Thai reps seek rubber deal
Vietnamese and Thai representatives met here on Thursday to discuss co-operation in the rubber industry.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong, and representatives from the Rubber Industry Group and the Rubber Association of Viet Nam.
The representatives attended the meeting included Thai Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Co-operative Theerachai Saenkaew among others.
Saenkaew suggested co-operation in exchanging scientific information, training, and expanding outlets for rubber production.
He stressed on his country’s concern about developing value-added products instead of exporting raw materials.
Thailand is now the biggest rubber producer in the world. It has an annual output of 3 million tonnes. Its domestic rubber industry consumes 300,000 tonnes a year compared to 40,000-50,000 tonnes in Viet Nam.
Saenkaew said Thailand had focused on developing the industry in its north-eastern region into a trade centre for Indochina.
Co-operation with Viet Nam would enable Thai rubber products to enter markets in China, Japan and the Republic of Korea, he said.
Bong agreed with Thailand ’s suggestions for co-operation and he entrusted the Viet Nam Rubber Industry Group to serve as a link.
