Vietnam to import 200,000 tonnes of salt

Vietnam will have to import an additional 200,000 tonnes of salt, announced the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on July 22.

The Ministry estimated that the country’s salt output in 2008 would reach between 900,000 and 950,000 tonnes, 150,000 to 200,000 tonnes lower than the target set earlier this year.

The shortage of salt was attributed to problematic weather conditions in the South Central and Mekong River Delta regions. 

The imported salt is expected to meet the increasing demand for salt in production and daily use and to control domestic salt prices, the Ministry added.
