Thousands of Mekong Delta homes prone to landslides
Landslides will be threatening thousands of households alongside rivers and streams in the Mekong Delta province during the upcoming flood season, according to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research.
The Mekong Delta now has about 6,000 households in landslide prone areas in urgent need of relocation. Most are in Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Dong Thap and An Giang provinces and Can Tho City.
This year, landslides claimed hundreds of ha of land in An Giang province.
Riverfront areas on Cai Khe Island and the Cai Cui and Cai Sau Canals in Can Tho City are in danger of slipping into the water.
Mekong Delta provincial authorities are struggling to prevent landslides and moveng local residents to sase areas while on a tight budget.
Can Tho City authorities have not found a way to relocate nearly 200 households along the Tra Noc River and Phong Dien embankment on a limited budget.
According to the Ca Mau provincial Department of Irrigation, there are at least 10 severe landslide areas along the province’s sea dyke where nearly 12,000 people are living in 3,000 houses.
No one has been moved yet in Ca Mau due to a lack of funds, according to a local official. The province needs about 200 billion VND (12.5 million USD) to consolidate the dyke.
