Stabilising prices of necessities

Prices of most of necessities in the country have remained stable after July 1. Localities are keeping a close watch over the market to stabilise prices.

Prices of fresh food lowered

In Hanoi markets, for the past week now, prices of rice, vegetables and fruits have been reduced by 10-20% compared to those of a month ago. This is due to abundant supplies as vegetables and fruits are in the harvest time. Lychees, pineapples, dragon fruits, grapefruits are available in market at cheap prices. Prices of rice have been reduced by an average VND 1,000 a kilogramme.

Prices of seafood products have also dropped by 10% compared to previous month. However, prices of seasoning and cosmetics have increased slightly. Prices of some imported products or products produced by imported materials have also increased.

Major trading companies in Hanoi have planned to take stock of more reserves to ensure abundant supplies of goods to meet local demands so as to make sure that there will be no sudden price hike.

Hanoi Trade Corporation that runs the Hapro Mart chains has signed various contracts with suppliers to ensure sufficient supplies of products to local consumers.

A representative from the Big C Supermarket has also revealed that it has guaranteed with suppliers to buy products in large quantity for a long period and make payment on time. In addition, Big C will boost promotion and accept lower profit on each product in the hope of larger sale.

From now to the end of 2008, Big C will reduce by 5-40% prices of fresh food; 25-40% prices of clothing products and 20-38% prices of household appliances.

In Lao Cai northern border province, prices of rice, other agricultural produce and food have been stable in wholesale markets of Coc Leu, Nguyen Du, Kim Tan and Cam Duong.

Market prices in Nghe An, Da Nang are also quite stable. In Da Lat, farmers are in difficulties as prices of vegetables have reduced sharply.

Prices of machinery, industrial products and energy increase slightly

While prices of food remain stable or are even slightly cut, prices of machinery, industrial products and energy increase slightly. In Lao Cai, prices machinery has increased by 10% while garments products up by 5-7%.

In Nghe An, prices of construction materials such as stone or brick has increased by 1.3-1.5 times.

In Da Nang, prices of plastic products have increased by 25-45% compared to last week as materials for production of these products have to be imported and paid in euros or US dollar. In addition, taking advantage of the situation, traders have also increased prices of other products such as cloth, cement, steel and construction materials.

Da Nang authorities are speeding up co-ordination and efforts to fight hoarding and impose strict penalty on those violators.

In Lam Dong province, construction materials, agricultural materials and fertilisers have reported an increase in prices of 20%. Prices of cooking oil, confectionary, seasoning, detergent and milk products have increased by 15-20%.

In Dak Nong province, a remote province in the Central Highlands, prices of construction materials tends to increase sharply as there are difficulties in production and transport because the locality is currently in the mid-rainy season.

Prices of fertiliser and insecticide have increased sharply in southern Dong Thap province, thus, the total cost for production of a tonne of rice has risen too.
