National Vocational Skills Competition 2008 opens

A total of 347 contestants from 39 localities and six ministries and branches are competing at the National Vocational Skills Competition 2008 that opened in Hanoi on July 21.

This year’s competition aims to select skilled contestants for the seventh ASEAN Vocational Skills Competition in Malaysia in November 2008 and the 40 th World Vocational Skills Competition in Calgary , Canada , in September 2009.

Deputy Head of the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) Vocational Training General Department Duong Duc Lan said that the biennial competition is intended to honour the value of young skilled workers and promote international cooperation and integration in vocational training and labour exports.

It also aims to accelerate skills training movements and create an opportunity for experts to learn vocational training experiences and to apply new technology in production and business, he added.

During the five-day competition, contestants are competing in five new skills, namely mechatronics, web design, graphic design technology, refrigeration and beauty care. The others include welding, civil electricity, industrial electronics, information technology’ software applications, computer aided drawing and design (CADD), cooking, restaurant service, wall and floor tiling, bricklaying, cabinet making, joinery, ladies dress making, automobile technology and plumbing.

At this year’s competition which is being held in ten venues in Hanoi and northern Hung Yen, Ha Nam and Ninh Binh provinces, six national jury boards will use the international calculation system to mark the contestants’ work.

Viet Nam ranked first at the sixth ASEAN Vocational Skills Competition in 2006 in Brunei with 19 prizes, including six gold, two silver and five bronze medals and six certificates for excellence.

Vietnam also won a certificate in electrical installations and ranked 25 out of 46 participating countries in eight skills at a world competition 2007 in Japan . Earlier, Vietnam became an official member of the World Vocational Skills Association in May 2006.
