Mekong may get 13ha fertiliser depot

The Viet Nam Fertiliser Association is encouraging the Government to license a fertiliser storage facility in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta region, according to deputy chairman of the association Nguyen Hac Thuy.

With a total investment capital of VND100 billion (US$6.06 million), the facility would cover 13ha in Can Duoc District of Long An Province.

It would operate under the name Five Stars, with the ownership of Five Stars International Joint Stock Co, and have a storage capacity of over 200,000 tonnes.

The project goal is to help stabilise fertiliser prices by providing a consistent source, unaffected by speculation and thereby benefiting farmers.

Scheduled for operation by next year's winter-spring rice crop, the facility would help not only with agricultural production but also with the strategic plan for economic development in the Mekong region.

The project would have steady support from enterprises involved in long-term trading, said general director of Five Stars Co Tran Van Muoi.

Five Stars is located near HCM City and eastern provinces, which trade roughly 20 million tonnes of commodities yearly.

There are plans to increase this number to around 30 million by 2020. The facility is also close to Bourbon Port, Highway 1A and Vam Co Dong River, convenient transportation hubs.

The establishment of Five Stars under the control of the Viet Nam Fertiliser Association would ensure real and high-quality fertiliser supplies, Thuy said.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development expressed hope that Five Stars would play an important role in ensuring the quality of fertiliser, given the present poor quality or counterfeit nature of the product.

In addition to advocating a storage solution, the association also requested that the Government adjust fertiliser import and export taxes and improve the production of quality NPK manure to further help stabilise the market. The production prices of essential goods like oil, iron, steel, fertiliser, food and agricultural materials have risen sharply.

Fertiliser prices have escalated to the highest level in the past 35 years. For example, DAP fertiliser prices rose by 351-562 per cent and potassium fertiliser by 335-365 per cent.

The demand for fertiliser for national agricultural production ranges between 8 and 8.3 million tonnes per year. The Mekong region uses around half of this amount.

Viet Nam Fertiliser Association and Five Stars Co are attempting to finish the facility by early next year and set reasonable price to satisfy local demand.
