Removing obstacles to tra and basa catfish production
Localities should take tougher measures to increase the consumption of tra and basa catfish and reduce farmers’ losses, said Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) Cao Duc Phat.
MARD Minister Cao Duc Phat chaired an online conference in Hanoi on June 8 with leaders from eight Mekong Delta provinces to remove obstacles to the production and consumption of tra and basa catfish.
Under the guidance of Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai at an earlier conference on June 1, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) provided a credit loan of VND1,000 billion for businesses to buy fish from farmers. However, no drastic changes were evidenced as barely 10 percent of the credit was disbursed. On the other hand, due to high interest loans, businesses still feel hesitant about borrowing the money to buy fish.
According to the Aquaculture Department under the MARD, Mekong Delta provinces still have more than 170,000 tons of tra and basa catfish in stock, of which 95,000 tonnes are now over-age. In order to distribute such a large quantity of fish, around VND1,400 billion is needed.
Therefore, capital provision remains an urgent matter while the disbursement is too slow.
SBV Deputy Governor Nguyen Dong Tien pledged to provide enough capital for businesses to facilitate their buying. However, it is important to recommend successful businesses so that the SBV can feel at ease to provide loans for them as requested.
