Government wants businesses’ help to fight inflation
The Government wants to garner objective, honest and constructive opinions from the business circle to help the national economy overcome difficulties, said a senior Cabinet member.
In his speech to open the Vietnam Business Forum in Hanoi on June 2, Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc stressed that the national economy is facing many challenges.
Though still growing in the past five months, the economy has shown signs of unstability which have largely impacted production, investment and operation of both local and foreign businesses, the minister said.
He reiterated that the Government’s top duty now is to curb inflation to ensure a favourable business environment for investors.
Though citing the inflation rate of 15.96 percent and trade deficit of 14.4 billion USD in the past five months, minister Phuc assured businesspeople that the Government has taken drastic measures to beat inflation.
Besides, the Government’s adjustment of socio-economic development programme with top priority given to fighting inflation has received the approval from lawmakers at the National Assembly’s ongoing third session, he noted.
Taking the floor, Acting Vietnam Country Director of the World Bank Martin Rama agreed that the country has been taking the right solutions to tame inflation.
For his part, Sing Foong Wong, Country Director of the International Finance Corporation, which co-hosted the business event, urged the Government and businesses to further reinforce their partnership to push up the renovation and maintain economic growth in a sustainable manner.
He said the country’s investment attraction in the past five months proved investors’ confidence on the Southeast Asian country’s future.
At the forum, which is held within the framework of the mid-term Consultative Group’s meeting, participants discussed the business environment in Vietnam and conversed with the Government on issues relating to banking, capital market, production and distribution, taxation, education, ports and tourism.
