Mekong Delta: Seafood production increased 252,000 MT
According to statistics of aquaculture sector, in 2011, harvested seafood output of Mekong River Delta in the region reached 2.19 million MT, up 252,000 MT from last year. In which 300,000 MT are black tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp and 1.2 million MT are pangasius.
This year, the Delta increased its aquaculture area to 762,000 hectares, up 9,000 hectares on that of 2010 in which 582,164 hectares were used for black tiger shrimp farming and over 5,400 hectares were used for whiteleg shrimp farming.
Most black tiger shrimp, whiteleg shrimp, pangasius, tilapia and clam are cultivated for export while freshwater giant prawn and red tilapia, silver pomfret, bronze featherback, marble goby, blood cockle are cultivated for local consumption.
Most black tiger shrimp and clam in the delta are cultivated under the model of extensive farming, an agricultural system that uses small inputs of labor, fertilizers and capital. Whiteleg shrimp and pangasius are cultivated under the intensive farming model.
The other species are cultivated under the model of extensive farming, semi-intensive and intensive in accordance with the recommendations of aquaculture sector.
Brackishwater shrimp farming area is mainly located at Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, Long An, Tien Giang provinces. Pangasius farming area is mainly located at An Giang, Dong Thap, Can Tho, Vinh Long, Ben Tre, Soc Trang, Tien Giang, Hau Giang, Tra Vinh provinces.
