Hanoi enters the biggest “sale-off” season of the year

Retailers have launched noisy sale promotion campaigns which are considered the biggest of the year in order to boost sale which has been going slowly over the last whole year.

Big C Thang Long, Hapro’s supermarkets, Pico home appliance center and Nguyen Kim Shopping Mall all have become more bustling since Christmas day.

Nguyen Kim has announced the program on offering price discounts of up to 49 percent for 500,000 consumer electronic goods, which lasts from December 9, 2011 to January 2, 2012. The program has prompted people to flock to the retail points of the chains, especially on weekends.

Not only offering big discounts, retailers also offer gifts to buyers. For example, those, who buy consumer goods, would get the gifts of bowls, dishes or drinks. Media Mart, for example, has offered the price discount of 13 million dong to those who buy Samsung TVs, and a carton of 24 cans of Heineken beer as a gift. Meanwhile, those, who buy Sony TVs would get a set of dishes worth 500,000 dong.

At Topcare, buyers now can enjoy the price discount of up to 50 percent and join lucky draws to obtain valuable prizes, including sedans.

Big C, one of the biggest supermarkets in Hanoi, is now running two sale promotion programs at the same time, applying to 600 goods items which have the price discounts of 5-50 percent.

An officer of Phu Nhuan Jewelry Company (PNJ) said that the company is running the biggest sale promotion program of the year, offering big price discounts and the gifts worth 10 billion dong.

Demand up

All supermarkets and shopping malls have said the purchasing power has been increasing in recent days. Le Tung, Marketing Director of Topcare, a home appliance center, said that the demand has increased by 20 percent.

Le Minh Hong in Cau Giay district was seen stepping out from Nguyen Kim Mall on Trang Thi Street with a lot of goods purchased, a 29 inch LG TV worth 2.7 million dong, a set of pots worth 290,000 dong and a Panasonic hair dryer 150,000 dong. “It is the time for buying things,” she said.

Vu Vinh Phu, Chair of the Hanoi Supermarket Association, said that 2011 was a very difficult year, when people tried to cut down spending. Therefore, organizing sale promotion programs prove to be the best way to stimulate the demand.

Supermarkets in operation till midnight

Pico offers price discounts until 24h, Eva de Eva sells goods at discounts at midnight, and Big C is also running a similar program. All the moves aim to attract more buyers.

A representative of Pico said that on December 31 night, or the New Year Eve, customers could buy some products at the prices lower than that on ordinary days by up to one million dong per product.

Prior to that Eva de Eva fashion shop also announced the program to celebrate its birthday by offering price discounts for a lot of products by 50 percent at midnight.

Commenting about the noisy sale promotion campaigns, Le Quoc Vinh, Chair of Le Media said on VnExpress that Vietnamese distributors have imitated foreign retailers when offering discounts at midnight. However, he thinks that this way may not help attract more customers in Vietnam, because consumers can easily buy goods anywhere, and they cannot change their habits by staying late at night to go shopping.

“Only original programs can lure customers,” Vinh said.

Meanwhile, Dr Le Dang Doanh, a well known economist, commented that the fact reflects the sharp fall in the demand and the big stocks of enterprises.
