Fish production to hit 5 million MT

According to Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), Viet Nam fisheries production in the first 11 months of 2011 was estimated to reach over 5 million MT, including 2.4 million MT of catch landings (up 2.3 percent) and 2.7 million MT of aquaculture production (up 5.5 percent) on those of the same period of 2010. Catch landings in November 2011 was estimated to hit 190 thousands MT.

Directorate of Fisheries (D-Fish) is co-operating with authorities from coastal provinces and cities to gather information about fishing activities at these localities; propagate laws on fish capture and fisheries resources protection in waters regulated in Tonkin Gulf Fishery Cooperation Agreement between Vietnam and China; inspect fishing activities and obedience of laws on fisheries resources protection in the provinces of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa.

Aquaculture production in November 2011 hit 246 thousands MT, driving the total of the first 11 months to 2.659 million MT, up 5.5 percent year-on-year.

According to the statistics from 29 coastal provinces, shrimp stocking area from the early 2011 to Nov reached 650,430 hectares, equal to 98.3 percent against the same period of 2010. In which black tiger shrimp farming area was 618,787 hectares and 31,643 hectares was used for whiteleg shrimp farming. Yield of brackishwater and saltwater shrimp reached 316,729 MT, equal to 96.7 percent year-on-year in which black tiger shrimp production was 198,642 MT and 118,087 MT of whiteleg shrimp.

So far, according to the statistics from localities, disease-infected shrimp area has been 84,597 hectares, equal to 302 percent year-on-year in which black tiger shrimp was 80,947 MT and whiteleg shrimp plague was 3.650 hectares.

Pangasius farming area is smaller than that of shrimp but production of pangasius is greater. As of the end of November 2011, it was estimated that pangasius farming area hit 5,306 hectares with harvesting production of 990,909 MT.

Raw fish price rocketed continuously from VND26,000 – 28,500 per kilogram, representing a VND1,000 – 1,500 increase against the early Oct 2011. The price of fish seed has been up in recent weeks because at the beginning of the farming crop, many hatcheries pushed up the fish seed price.

From September up to now, two leading fish farming provinces Dong Thap and An Giang has been hurt by floods. From the early year to Nov, in Dong Thap, the total damage for fishery caused by floods amounted to nearly VND40 billion in which fish production was lost at 2,000 MT and 220 hectares was damaged completely.

In An Giang province, the total loss was estimated at VND11.7 billion in which pangasius farming area was hit the most heavily, many hatcheries were affected and many farming ponds were deep in the flood. Can Tho province lost 583 hectares of fish farming area with production of 31 MT. Other provinces affected by floods were Kien Giang, Vinh Long, Hau Giang and Can Tho.
