Bivalve mollusk exports highlighted in Canada and the U.S.
In the first 9 months of 2011, Vietnam bivalve mollusk exports were gloomy because of low demand from some Asian markets and lack of raw materials caused by diseases. However, bivalve mollusk exports to Canada and the U.S. were positive. In March 2011, bivalve mollusk exports reported a decrease in both volume and value compared to those of the same period last year.
Bivalve mollusk exports experienced an increase of 19 percent in volume and 11 percent in value in May 2011 and an increase of 30 percent and 22.3 percent, respectively in June 2011 but in the following months, bivalve mollusk exports tumbled sharply. Therefore, as of the end of September 2011, bivalve mollusk export value still sank 8.6 percent over the same period last year.
In the first 9 months of 2011, bivalve mollusk exports to the U.S. and Canada helped to compensate for the fall in total bivalve mollusk exports. Exports to the U.S. and Canada recorded the most stable and positive growth. As of the end of September, export value to the U.S. and Canada surged over 29 percent and 30 percent, respectively on those of the same period of 2010. In Jan-Sep 2011, the U.S. accelerated to import Vietnam bivalve mollusk, up from 2 – 150 percent year-on-year in both volume and value. At this period, Canada outstripped Switzerland in the list of leading bivalve mollusk importers of Vietnam. In April 2011, Vietnam bivalve mollusk exports to Canada marked a year-on-year increase of over 1,800 percent in volume and nearly 1,100 percent in value and in Jan-Sep 2011, the year-on-year increase was 30.3 percent.
