Japan to provide $4.5 million to increase food safety efforts

Japan will support Viet Nam in strengthening its national agro-fishery production safety inspection system, according to a US$4.5million deal signed in the capital yesterday.

Signatories included the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA), the Viet Nam Sanitary and Phytosanitary Notification Authority and Enquiry Point, the International Co-operation Department and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The project will focus on enhancing the capacity of agro-forestry and fisheries inspections, renovating the National Inspection Programme on agro-forestry and fisheries as well as developing human resources.

"Many laboratories lack macro analysis and high-precision capabilities. Therefore, the number of foods available for inspection is limited, with inspection results differing among laboratories," said Taigo Endo, an expert from JICA who carried out a feasibility study based on the new project.
