Viettel’s arm dominates Cambodia’s telecom cable network

Metfone, the Cambodian subsidiary of the Vietnam military-run telecom firm, Viettel, is now controlling about 80 percent of cable network and has expanded its coverage to each commune in Cambodia, newspaper quoted the data released by Frost and Sullivan’s Asia-Pacific branch.

It has contributed 16,000 kilometers of optical cable in the total of 20,000 kilometers of the entire Cambodian market, developing the network faster and providing cheaper services for consumers in comparison with other rivals in the market, said Frost and Sullivan.

The remaining 20 percent market share is controlled by two local companies, Telecom Cambodia (TC) and CFOCN.

Metfone, the company owned by Vietnam military-run telecom firm, Viettel, said it has started to deploy telecom infrastructure after receiving investment license since 2006, declaring to have established a network 13-fold the entire national networks developed in the past 10 years.

An analyst said Metfone's early investment in infrastructure to 1,600 communes is a preparation for the provision of 3G services here.

But Nguyen Huy Tho, Mefone CEO, has refused to comment about the recent statistics.

Steven Cao, CEO of CFOCN, has estimated the number of Metfone's deployed cable reached about 10,000-15,000 kilometers.

Meanwhile, CFOCN also owns only about 5,000 kilometers, while TC owns about 1,000 kilometers of cable, said Lao Saroeun, general director of TC.

Cao also said that the actual number of mobile subscribers of Metfone reached nearly 4.7 million, not 8 million subscribers as announced by Metfone.
