EVN signs contract with Chinese firm

Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) yesterday signed a contract worth more than US$1.3 billion for the construction of a thermo-electric power plant with China's CHENGDA, DEC, SWEPDI and ZEPC in Ha Noi.

The Duyen Hai 3 thermo-electric power plant, which has the capacity of 1,245MW to produce between 7.5-8 billion kWh per year, is planned for an area of over 62 hectares in Dan Thanh Commune, Duyen Hai District in the southern province of Tra Vinh.

The investment capital will be mobilised from China's banks and EVN.

Speaking at the ceremony, EVN General Director Pham Le Thanh said the project was one of three plants of the Duyen Hai Electricity Centre, with the total capacity of 4,200MW. This is part of the national power development scheme for the 2006-15 period, approved by the Vietnamese Government.

The Duyen Hai 3 thermo-electric power plant was expected to use advanced technology to increase productivity with reasonable cost and assure international criteria on environmental protection, Thanh said.

Coal would be transported from northern Quang Ninh Province to the plant by a waterway vehicle with capacity of up to 30,000DWT.

Under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract, the plant will begin its construction this year and is expected to go into operation by the third quarter of 2015.
