VN, India discuss plans to build ships together
Viet Nam and India had huge potential to co-operate on shipbuilding because the world industry was still recovering from the economic downturn, Indian Ambassador Ranit-Rae said at a seminar here on Tuesday.
Ranit-Rae said India was interested in Viet Nam's shipbuilding abilities because of its low labour costs and past experience.
He said the restructuring of the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) would create the right conditions for domestic shipbuilding to develop.
India itself had witnessed outstanding development in the industry. Revenue and revenue growth from its own industry had risen 250 per cent in the eight years to 2010.
Ranit-Rae said the two countries could strengthen co-operation in technology transfer and development of support industries for the shipbuilding sector.
Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Hong Truong told the seminar that Vinashin had earlier signed an agreement with a shipbuilder in Goa, India, to train personnel.
He said he hoped the seminar would help the group seek out Indian partners to invest in its plan to build a ship repair yard at the Cam Ranh Port in the central province of Khanh Hoa.
Besides that project, Truong expected the co-operation would help Vietnamese shipbuilders to increase localisation rate and diversify products in the shipbuilding industry.
Truong also said he hoped managers and policy makers in both countries would boost the exchange of information that would lead to increased co-operation.
