Vietnamese products affected by tsunami in Japan

Vietnamese exports are being affected by the tsunami and earthquake, which has caused great loss of lives and property in Japan.

For many years, Japan has been the third largest export market of Vietnamese garment products, especially since 2009 so many garment businesses are worried that the recent earthquake and tsunami will affect their orders.

Pham Xuan Hong, General Director of the Sai Gon 3 Garment Company said on March 14 that he worked with some Japanese customers and they said there will some changes in future demand.

Le Van Tri, Deputy Director of the Casumina Company, which exports US$600,000-700,000 worth of automobile tyres to Japan every month, said it will be difficult to boost exports to Japan this year.

Vietnamese shrimp exporters are also very worried as Japan is one their largest importers.

Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Processors and Exporters, Truong Dinh Hoe, said there will be impacts on Vietnamese exports because most of them ship to ports near Tokyo which have been damaged by the tsunami. We do not know how many contracts will have to be adjusted in the future.

Vietnam received nearly 450,000 Japanese visitors in 2010, the third highest number after China and the Republic of Korea. In the first two months of this year, more than 92,000 Japanese visited Vietnam, up 130 percent over the same period last year.

According to travel agents, the decline in the number of Japanese tourists in the next few months will affect the target set by the Vietnamese tourism sector.

A representative from TNT-JTB Agent in Ho Chi Minh City, a joint-venture between Vietnamese and Japanese tourism companies, said he did not know how many Japanese tourists will cancel their tours and many tourists have returned home before their tours have finished.

Apex Company said eight out of 10 tours have been cancelled over the past few days.

According to companies like Saigontourist, Viettravel, Fiditourist and Ben Thanh Tourist, there are no Vietnamese tourists in Japan at present, but, tours of Japan scheduled for late March and April will be canceled.
