Plant to help address power crisis

Construction of the giant Thai Binh 2 thermo-power plant started on Mar 1.

The project’s developer PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PVC) yesterday signed an engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) contract valued at VND31.505 trillion ($1.6 billion) with PetroVietnam Construction Joint Stock Corporation (PVC) to build the plant.

Site clearance and ground leveling activities for the 1.200MW plant, which started two years ago, have now been completed.

The first turbine was expected to start generating power in 2014 and the second turbine in early 2015. When commissioned, the plant will add 6.7 billion kWh per year to the national power system.

The plant will use imported coal sources. The plant is part of the Thai Binh thermo-power centre located on the Tra Ly River’s left bank, three kilometres from the Tra Ly estuary.

Covering 254.2 hectares, the centre consists of Thai Binh 1 and Thai Binh 2 thermo-power plants. Thai Binh 1 thermo-power plant, with a total designed capacity of 600MW, is being developed by Electricity of Vietnam.
