Government pulls plug on import of 100 items

The Ministry of Trade has unveiled a list of 100 products subject to import restrictions as part of its efforts to cut the trade deficit this year.

They include milk and milk products, cellphones, live birds, meat and processed meat, certain kinds of fishes, crab and lobster, eggs, alcohol, cooking oil, vegetables, and some other consumer goods.

Milk and dairy product like butter and ice-cream and cars of under 1800 cc and over 2500 cc face the most restrictions.

In the first two month of the year imports of restricted items like alcohol, tobacco, and cosmetics topped US$1.1 billion, 24.8 percent up from the same period last year and accounting for 7.4 percent of total imports.
