EVN inks contract for Huoi Quang plant

Electricity of Viet Nam yesterday signed a US$65.2 million contract with a joint venture between Tianjin Alstom Hydro and Hydrochina Zhongnan Engineering Corporation to provide electricity and mechanical equipment as well as technical services to the Huoi Quang Hydropower Plant.

The contract is being financed by the French Development Agency.

With a total investment of over VND11.7 trillion ($547.5 million), the plant is expected to generate 520MW when it goes into operation on the Da River in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau.

Construction began in Than Uyen District back in January 2006.

The two-unit plant, part of Viet Nam's Governmental Agenda for electricity expansion during 2006-15, will generate an average of 1.94 billion kWh per year.

The first turbine is expected to be operational by the end of 2014 and the second by April of 2015.

The plant is expected to supplement power for production and living in the north as well as ease the shortage of electricity in the country.
