It’s difficult to retain talent in post-crisis period, experts warn

Experts have warned about a new wave of workers moving from businesses to other fields during this post-crisis period, which may last several years.

Karean Davies, Managing Director of Xage Consultancy, has warned that businesses may lose employees in the post-crisis period

Instead of remaining still and feeling content with their jobs, most workers nowadays have become more selective in seeking jobs.

At a workshop on human resource strategy organized two days ago, Karean Davies, Managing Director of Xage Consultancy, has warned that businesses may lose employees in the post-crisis period, when the demand for qualified workers increases.

She said that when the national economy recovers, businesses should pay more attention to developing their workforce, invest more money on training and retaining talent, and allow workers to have more job choices. During the crisis period, workers were satisfied with normal jobs that could bring in enough income to feed their families. However, in the future, they will be more selective and will not be satisfied with their normal jobs.

Mrs. Karean Davies said businesses should be prepared for the new wave of workers transferring jobs in order to avoid shocks caused by the transfer. She said that in the UK during the recession, the Government called on companies to make investments in human resources, while awards were promised to companies with the best human resource policies, such as companies that could help their employees improve their skills, help them live happily, and devote themselves to work. The companies which won the awards not only had qualified employees working for them, but could also help their employees polish their image.

Deputy Director of the HCM City human resources forecasting and labor market information center Tran Anh Tuan has predicted that the period from now until the end of the year will be the most bustling period for the city’s labor market, because now is the key time for labor transfers. Companies must now compete with each other to lure and retain qualified workers. If businesses do not have reasonable policies to use talented workers, they will suffer from a “workforce crisis” which will negatively affect their business.

Many businesses have “laid the red carpet” to invite workers to their businesses. They have offered many incentives, including low overtime hours, higher pay, and more opportunities for job promotion.

According to Tuan, laborers from provinces now tend to return to cities to seek jobs there. During the crisis period, workers left big cities for their home villages and returned to their field jobs. It is now the right time for workers to seek jobs, since businesses are stepping up their production for the Tet sales season.  If laborers cannot find long-term jobs, they will look for “seasonal” jobs that allow them to work in cities until Tet.

The most important factor in luring talent is high wages. Hoa Nguyen, senior manager of Taletnet, said that businesses should set wage levels every year, depending on performance in the labor market, instead of keeping the same wage levels for many years.
