HCM City continues to lead socio-economic development

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday praised HCM City for its significant contributions to the country's socio-economic development over the past five years.

Speaking to more than 700 delegates at the city's 5th Congress on the Patriotic Emulation Movement, the Prime Minister said the patriotic emulation movement helped accelerate the city's socio-economic development. "HCM City continues to lead other cities in various sectors of the economy and is a driving force behind the country's socio-economic growth," Dung said.

The southern economic hub accounts for more than 30 per cent of State budget contributions, 30 per cent of national industrial production value,37 per cent of export turnover and 20 per cent of GDP.

It also leads the country in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), with the city's economic growth rate 1.5 times higher than that of the entire country, according to the Prime Minister.

Dung praised the city for its initiatives and pioneering role in dealing with social issues to ensure progress and fairness in society, including poverty reduction and charity support for the poor and disadvantaged.

Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the city People's Committee, said that the city's annual economic growth rate reached an average of 11 per cent over the past five years.

The city's GDP per capita was estimated to reach $2,800 this year, 1.68 times higher than that of 2005, Quan said.

"The city attracted nearly 2,200 FDI projects worth US$19.5 billion over the past five years, 5.2 times higher than that of the 2001-05 period," he said.

"More than 580,000 new jobs were created and 1.34 million people were employed during the period," he added.

The city had also sent more than 50,400 guest workers to work abroad over the past five years.

The annual income of households recognised as living below the poverty line was raised to VND6 million ($315) per person in the city by the end of 2008, Quan said.

During the period, more than 15,000 new projects and products were completed, and more than 16,300 initiatives and technological innovations as well as 2,000 scientific research projects were developed.

Dung asked the city to call on its residents to participate in the patriotic emulation movement, and to outline specific objectives for the next five-year period.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister granted an emulation banner to the city and 14 collectives. Some 821 collectives and individuals were also honoured for their contributions to the city's patriotic emulation movement over the past five years.
