Power companies sign contract to push hydro project in Laos
Viet-Laos Power Joint Stock Com (VLPC) and Laos Electricity Corporation (EdL) have inked a deal to establish Xekaman 1 Electricity Co Ltd.
The agreement, which was signed by VLPC General Director Nguyen Thang Long and EdL Executive Director Khammy Inthirat on May 21, is designed to accelerate the Xekaman 1 hydro-electric power project, an important investment co-operation project between Viet Nam and Laos.
The 322-MW Xekaman 1 project is being built at a cost of US$441 million on the Xekaman river in Laos's Attopu Province.
The plant, together with the Xekaman Xansay hydro-electric power station, will supply over 1.2 billion KWh a year when it goes into operation in 2014.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese concluded a fact-finding tour in Laos.
The tour aimed to implement a pilot scheme to promote the use of the Vietnamese language among Vietnamese expatriates in Laos so as to help them use the mother tongue, preserve their traditional cultural identity and tighten solidarity and mutual assistance in the community.
During their trip, the delegation held working sessions with the Vietnamese Embassy, the Vietnamese Association in Laos, representatives from the Vietnamese Business Association in Laos and Lao education experts.
On this occasion, a seminar on the learning and teaching of the Vietnamese language was held at Nguyen Du school in Vientiane.
