Gas cylinder deposits raised to curb illegal sales

Gas companies have increased their deposit fees for cooking gas cylinders by VND50,000-100,000, saying the move will help prevent their canisters from being stolen and resold.

Local gas companies say that because customers only pay deposits of VND170,000-200,000 for 12- kilogram cylinders, which can be sold for VND350,000-400,000, it has been too easy for customers to make a profit illegally selling the rented canisters both locally and to clients in Cambodia.

Company leaders said they wanted the increase, equivalent to about US$2.80-5.60, to deter the illegal trade.

Le Phuc Dai, General Director of Vinagas, said Vietnamese gas cylinders were often sold near the Moc Bai Border Gate, which provides passage from the southern province of Tay Ninh to Cambodia and its capital Phnom Penh.
