Online business – lucrative extra job

As one of the most prestigious salesmen on an online market name chodientu, Hoang Phong Luu has sold antique and rare objects online for two years.

Having a passion for antiques, Luu participated in phomuaban, an online market, to learn experience. He then learned about chodientu and opened an online shop there, selling antiques and rare things collected from his hometown in the central province of Quang Binh.

Luu, 31, a designer, said selling antiques online is an extra job. “Having your own business is good. I earn more from this extra job than from my major job,” he said.

Luu is one of thousands of salesmen on chodientu. Besides prestigious shops like Tran Vuong Viet, Mr. Giang, Nguyen Tuan Anh, chodientu has nearly 3,500 regular shops, making a total transaction value of more than VND150 billion ($8.82 million) in 2008, six times more than in 2007. The top ten shops on chodientu had a total transaction value of over VND4 billion.

The easy-to-see advantage of online business is sellers do not have to hire store or staff and don’t need to have a lot of capital. There are a lot of websites in Vietnam allowing people to post free ads and open shops like YouShop, 123mua, vatgia, diendan5giay, muare, etc.

“Economic recession makes people worry but I think this is an opportunity for online business in Vietnam,” said the Director of chodientu, Nguyen Hoa Binh.

Many youngsters also do business online. Hoang Ngan, a PR officer at a media company in Hanoi, owns an online fashion shop on YouShop. She starts a day at 7am by visiting some shopping websites to compare prices, designs then goes to the office. At noon, she wanders to fashion shops to seek sale-off and unique products. She combines these things into a collection and takes pictures and posts them on her online shop. Ngan can earn several million dong per month from this shop, equivalent to her salary at the office.

With VND2 million ($115), an old computer and a shared Internet line with the neighbor, Thanh, a law student, helps his mother earn some money. He advertises cuisines cooked by his mother on forums and free ads webs. Income from this service is sufficient for the mother and child in Hanoi.
