Nokia Vietnam among big names sued for copyright infringement
The Recording Industry Association of Vietnam (RIAV) has filed lawsuits against mobile phone seller Nokia Vietnam and FPT Telecom for copyright infringement of recorded music, said an RIAV official.
RIAV says that FPT Telecom is sharing recorded music over the Internet via its website, Nhac So, and using copyrighted material on its internet television service, IPTV.
Meanwhile, Nokia Vietnam has been allegedly allowing its customers to download 1,000 copyrighted songs from a 10,000 song database through FPT Telecom servers.
RIAV is expected to hold a press conference about the lawsuits Monday, said the official.
Other music producers, namely HT Production and Kim Loi Studio, have also jointly sued multimedia company VTC Intercom for selling copyrighted music to mobile phone service provider Viettel Mobile through the service of I-muzik.
Viettel Mobile is providing its subscribers with ringtones through I-muzik service that include songs from the two producers.
HT Production and Kim Loi Studio have asked Viettel Mobile to immediately remove all songs performed by the two singers Dan Truong and Cam Ly from the I-muzik website and to compensate them for damages prior to November 5.
There has not yet been any information on how much RIAV is asking for in compensation.
RIAV was founded in 2003 to represent the interests of the recording industry in Vietnam. At present, it acts on behalf of more than 50 companies and its stated policies are to fight music piracy and enforcement copyright laws, including digital rights management.
