Top Five eCommerce events of 2007
The introduction of online payment was selected by 41.1% of voters as the most important e-commerce event in 2007, according to a survey by the eCommerce Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Some 21.2% of those surveyed said the second most important event was globally recognized eCommerce groups as Ebay, Google and Yahoo offering their services in Vietnam.
The establishment of the Vietnam eCommerce Association (Vecom) is third, with 17.3% of votes.
The fourth and fifth events were the implementation of the eCommerce Law with 12.4% and the remaining 8% went 30 of 64 provinces and cities in Vietnam officially issuing plans for eCommerce development through 2010.
Tran Huu Linh, Deputy Head of the eCommerce Department, said voting results are contrary to the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s experts’ opinion that the implementation of the eCommerce Law was the most important event of 2007.
According to said experts, 2007 is a significant year for the development of eCommerce in Vietnam after an eCommerce legal framework was issued, including the Law on eCommerce, the amended Trade Law, the Decrees on eCommerce and eCommerce Transactions in Financial Activities.
Related ministries and agencies are compiling further documents that will guide the implementation process of the above legal statutes, for example, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce’s draft circular on contract transactions via the internet and the Ministry of Finance’s circular on eCommerce for the stock market.
As for problems with e-commerce in 2007, network security is considered the major hindrance, followed by online payment, awareness and law.
The Department of eCommerce forecasts 2008 as a strong year for the industry, as the B2C (business to consumer) model will be introduced in conjunction with online payment services.
According to the Ministry of Information and Trade, around 38% of Vietnamese enterprises have their own websites and over 93% are connected to the internet.
